Quest University Canada
Quest University Canada

Quest University Canada, tucked in the Coast Mountains in Squamish, B.C., is located on Squamish Nation ancestral land that has tremendous spiritual significance as a place of learning and contemplation. The university is unique in the Canadian academic world: a private, not-for-profit university offering a single Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree and focusing solely on excellence in undergraduate education. Just nine years old, it’s a reinvention of the well-rounded curricula of American liberal arts colleges, but with dramatic differences. Class sizes are capped at 20 students, and courses are taken one at a time in intensive 3 1/2 – week blocks.
Quest regularly tops the National Survey of Student Engagement, an in-depth survey that assesses how well universities follow best practices. In addition to allowing students to concentrate deeply on each course, the Block Plan liberates professors to take students on field trips. A course in volcanology brought students on a very long field trip: 10 days at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. An ancient history course allowed students to tour Turkey and Greece. A visual anthropology class took place in the Himalayas of India.
But it’s not just the Block Plan that’s different. The first two years of the degree, called the Foundation Program, is professor-driven and covers a broad range of subjects. Quest’s new president, Peter Englert, says he chose to come to Quest for “the opportunity to work with Quest’s gifted tutors.”
The latter two years, called the Concentration Program, are student-driven, with each student focused on a single question of his or her choosing, such as, “What’s the best way to educate a child?” or “Is democracy a viable form of government to solve the problems of the 21st century?” Students design their own curricula and take experiential learning blocks off campus to gain real-world experience. The program culminates in a Keystone project.
The Keystone project helps students find their paths post-graduation. For example, a student who asked about the best way to educate a children spent one month in three different types of schools built on three different philosophies: she read literature that inspired each and wrote a paper comparing the approaches, which she used to apply for a master’s of education. The student who asked about the viability of democracy became interested in different types of voting systems and went on to graduate school in New Brunswick, where he helped design a public consultation to find out which voting system suits New Brunswickers.
Quest University Canada is approved by the Degree Quality Assessment Board (DQAB) under the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education. The university is registered as a British Columbia Education Quality Assurance (EQA) approved post-secondary institution. (EQA is a quality assurance designation that identifies BC public and private post-secondary institutions that have met or exceeded provincial government recognized quality assurance standards and offer consumer protection.)
